AI search readiness starts with a useful, accessible page
A practical audit for AI search visibility: check crawl access, useful answers, consistent facts and visible structured data before adding more tools.
Start with one real customer question
Choose a question that matters before opening a markup generator. An independent software operator might ask, “Can I keep my website if I stop paying for optional AI features?” A useful page gives a direct answer, describes the boundary between the website and the paid service, and explains what happens next. This is an illustrative planning example, not a claim about measured search performance.
Write the answer in ordinary visible text. Place the essential condition near the answer instead of burying it in a promotional paragraph. A reader should be able to distinguish a permanent product entitlement from a subscription feature without interpreting slogans. That clarity is a useful editorial objective even when a page never appears in an AI-generated search response.
Check access before adding technology
Google documents that its existing SEO guidance also applies to AI features in Search. It does not specify an additional special schema or AI text file as a requirement for appearing there. Eligibility and appearance are different: meeting technical conditions does not promise that a particular page will be included.
Build a small inspection sheet for your own site. Record the final page URL, HTTP response, indexability decision, canonical target and whether the main answer is present in the rendered page. Compare the mobile view with the desktop view. If your own navigation cannot reach the answer, adding a machine-readable description will not resolve the underlying discovery problem.

Make claims that a reader can check
Separate a capability from a result. “The system exports a sitemap” describes a testable function. “The system will improve your rankings” makes a prediction that your implementation alone cannot establish. Product pages become easier to maintain when their claims point to observable behaviour and clearly state any dependency on a paid service.
Use a compact claim register as a working template: claim; evidence location; responsible component; last verification; limitation. For a licence feature, the evidence might be an actual status screen and an explanation of expiry behaviour. Keep confidential credentials out of both the public explanation and the evidence shared with readers. The register is an internal maintenance habit, not another public file that search engines require.

Keep structured data aligned with the page
When structured data is appropriate, make it describe what the reader can actually see. A product price, article author or organisation name should not silently differ between the page and its metadata. If there is no defensible factual value, omit the property rather than inventing something merely to complete a template.
A practical review compares three surfaces: the visible answer, the page metadata and the structured data. Write one expected value for each factual field and note its source. Recheck after changing pricing, product access or publication details. This catches contradictions that can confuse both people and automated systems, without treating schema as an independent substitute for a useful page.

Measure progress without inventing attribution
Start with a baseline that you can explain. Keep a dated copy of the page, its main claims and the checks you performed. Watch the reporting that is actually available to your account. Read the reports actually available to your account according to their current definitions, and keep the evidence behind each conclusion visible. Do not label every unexplained visit as an AI referral.
For a small site, an operational scorecard can be more useful than a speculative visibility number. Track whether important pages are reachable, whether their answers remain accurate and whether broken links are repaired. Treat any later search change as an observation to investigate. A clear audit trail helps you improve the page while keeping marketing conclusions proportional to the evidence.
