SEO vs GEO vs AEO: differences explained for Singapore SMEs

Start with SEO (search engine optimisation) when pages are hard to find or understand. Add GEO (generative engine optimisation) when generated answers misrepresent your business, and AEO (answer engine optimisation) when customers need clear answers to specific questions. These workstreams overlap; commission the tasks your situation needs.

Use SEO for search foundations, GEO for generated answers and AEO for clear answers. Compare deliverables and measurement limits for Singapore SMEs.

Begin with the shared foundations

Start by asking whether the business has a useful, accurate page for the service a customer is considering. A page that leaves the offer unclear cannot be repaired simply by renaming the work GEO. Our proposed sequence is to verify the facts, resolve access and navigation problems, improve the explanation and then observe results. Google’s guidance says existing SEO foundations remain relevant to its AI features and does not require special AI markup. That is specific guidance about Google Search, not proof that every external assistant works in the same way. Keep the provider named when interpreting a source.

Use a buying question to assign the work

Consider an illustrative customer asking whether an existing website can be retained while enquiry handling is improved. The SEO task might be to make the relevant service page easy to find and clear about the scope. The AEO task might be to answer that exact question near the start, then explain dependencies and exclusions. The GEO task might be to check how a named assistant describes that service in a fixed sample and whether the cited source is accurate. One page can support all of those activities. The quote should avoid charging for the same underlying draft several times under different labels.

Write an answer that can stand on its own

Our answer-first approach begins with the direct response, then explains when it applies and what the reader needs to do next. It is an editorial method, not a published ranking formula. A useful answer names the service, the conditions, the evidence and the responsible owner. Avoid opening every section with a slogan or hiding a material exclusion far below the claim. If the honest answer is “it depends on access to your existing platform”, say what must be checked. The purpose is to help a buyer decide, whether they read the page directly or encounter an excerpt elsewhere.

Keep markup and optional files in proportion

Structured data can describe the content of a page, while hreflang identifies corresponding language versions. Use them to express real content and relationships. The llms.txt project is a proposal for presenting website information to agents; publishing a file is not evidence that a provider reads or uses it. These are useful implementation questions, but they should not consume the brief while the service explanation remains incomplete. Ask which page content each technical change supports, how it will be validated and what it cannot establish. A schema type should describe the page rather than be added solely because its name sounds valuable.

Use different records for different outcomes

For search work, agree the page set, reporting period and the visits or enquiries you intend to assess. For sampled AI answers, retain the exact question, provider, language, date, answer and citations. For answer-first editing, check accuracy, completeness and whether the reader can find the next action. Do not merge all three into a single unexplained visibility score. A brand mention is not automatically a qualified enquiry, and a useful page can still be omitted by an external platform. Review the evidence at the level it actually supports, then choose a concrete correction or experiment for the next period.

Give each language a real owner

Choose the audience before deciding which versions to publish. Our content structure uses English, Singapore Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese written for Hong Kong usage. The facts should stay aligned, but the wording, examples and terminology need an editor who understands the reader. Corresponding pages should link to one another rather than send every language choice to the homepage. When a price rule, service area or source changes, review the affected versions together. This is maintenance work that belongs in the scope. Publishing more language URLs without a review owner does not create a reliable multilingual service explanation.

Compare a proposed scope, not a promised position

Ask each provider to show the pages they will work on, the facts they need, the technical changes they can implement and the observations you will receive. Identify which work is initial and which continues. Clarify who approves publication and what happens if a source is missing or a platform result changes. No one on your project can make an external assistant recommend your business on demand. A useful proposal should still be specific about the work it controls. Bring your existing site and repeated customer questions to the conversation, then choose the smallest coherent scope that addresses the current problem.
