AI marketing glossary for Singapore SMEs: GEO, AEO and more
Use these terms to describe the work you want to commission. Where a term is our editorial shorthand, we say so. Examples are illustrative, and platform or legal statements link to dated sources. Each entry points back to a deeper guide or service instead of becoming a separate short-answer library.
GEO (generative engine optimisation)
Our working term for improving how a business can be understood and represented in generated answers. The work centres on accurate source material and dated observations, rather than control of an assistant’s recommendations.
In practice: For a brief, identify the service fact that a customer needs to understand and the source page you can correct. Name the assistant you want to observe rather than asking for a universal AI score. Keep the original answer alongside any interpretation, then decide whether the problem is inaccurate information, an unclear offer or a missing source. Those are different next tasks and should not be collapsed into a request for more mentions.
Illustrative example: Review a fixed question and the sources cited before deciding which service fact needs correction.
AEO (answer engine optimisation)
Our editorial term for making a question easy to answer from a clear, supported source. It includes a direct response, relevant conditions and an understandable next step.
In practice: It is not a distinct ranking formula. When commissioning a page, list the buyer’s actual question, the supported answer and the condition that could change it. Ask the editor to keep material exclusions near the answer. If the response depends on a missing business decision, resolve that decision before expanding the wording. Assess the draft by whether a reader can act on it, not by whether it repeats a question in a heading or uses a fashionable acronym.
Illustrative example: Answer whether an existing website can be retained, then explain the access checks required.
AI-SEO
In our service naming, SEO work considered alongside AI-answer visibility. It should still specify pages, facts, technical tasks and observations.
In practice: Google’s AI search guidance retains existing SEO foundations. Ask a provider to distinguish the SEO implementation from the AI-answer observation. The same useful page can support both, but the evidence differs. A changed title or a corrected service description is a completed output; whether a platform later cites it is an observation. Keep those records separate, with dates and the pages affected. This makes a report easier to assess without implying that a new service label changes who controls the external result.
Illustrative example: One brief covers a clearer service page and a separate AI-answer observation log.
llms.txt
A proposed website information file intended to help agents use a site. Treat it as an optional publication format whose adoption must not be assumed.
In practice: It does not establish that a particular assistant reads it. Before adding the file, decide who maintains the descriptions and links when the website changes. An outdated guide to a site is not useful merely because it has the expected filename. Check the file against the public pages and keep its limits explicit in the proposal. A provider should explain what it publishes and how it validates the links without presenting the file as a substitute for useful page content or a measurable recommendation outcome.
Illustrative example: List the canonical service and guide URLs, then check that the links resolve.
Structured data
Machine-readable descriptions of page content. Use the type and properties that fit the visible material, without adding hidden claims or implying a search appearance is assured.
In practice: In the brief, identify the content type first: a service, an article, a breadcrumb or a defined term. Then ask which supported properties describe that content. Validate the generated markup and check that references point to a defined item. If a business fact changes, review the visible wording and markup together. An error-free syntax check is useful implementation evidence, but it does not independently verify the business claim described by that syntax.
Illustrative example: Describe a documented case as an Article, with dates that match the published record.
Hreflang
An annotation for corresponding language or regional page versions. Google documents return links between the versions.
In practice: It should point to the equivalent page, not merely to a language homepage. For a multilingual project, keep an inventory of the pages that genuinely correspond. Agree how a new page gets its language equivalents and how a retired page is removed from the language map. Check both the destination and the return link. The annotation is a relationship between versions, not a reason to publish an incomplete language page. The content and its review owner should exist before the link is presented as a usable alternative for a reader.
Illustrative example: The English process page links to its Simplified and Traditional Chinese equivalents.
Answer-first content
Our editing method of giving the direct answer before the background. Follow it with conditions, evidence, limitations and the next action.
In practice: The aim is a useful explanation for a person, rather than a formulaic block written only for extraction. Use the method for a real buying question rather than turning every paragraph into a question-and-answer pair. Some topics need a comparison table, a process sequence or an evidence limitation before a reader can decide. The direct answer should make the rest of that explanation easier to follow. During review, ask whether the conditions are close enough to prevent the first sentence being misunderstood when read alone or quoted without the surrounding page.
Illustrative example: Explain what changes a quote, then provide the checklist for preparing one.
AI Overviews
An AI feature in Google Search described in Google’s website guidance. It can present an overview with supporting links.
In practice: Eligibility and inclusion remain different matters; this glossary does not predict whether a business will appear. If the brief includes observing this feature, agree the question set and what evidence will be retained. Do not label every generated answer on the web as an AI Overview. Keep the product name, query, date and cited pages together so that the observation can be discussed accurately. If the feature is absent from a sampled result, record that absence without substituting a different product and presenting it as an equivalent measurement of the same experience.
Illustrative example: Record the query and date when checking whether a service page is cited.
Entity consistency
Our editorial shorthand for keeping the same business facts aligned across the pages and records you control. It includes names, service descriptions and contact paths.
In practice: Treat it as a checking discipline, not a promise about a platform’s internal knowledge. A practical source register should name the fact owner and the places where an approved statement is reused. When the offer changes, update those records together rather than edit only the most visible page. Resolve conflicting names or contact details with the business before choosing one for a draft. Consistency should preserve accurate meaning: repeating an unsupported statement across many pages does not make it better evidence or a stronger basis for a customer commitment.
Illustrative example: Correct an outdated service area in every affected language version.
Turnstile
Cloudflare’s challenge mechanism used in form protection. Its token needs server-side validation; showing a widget in the browser is not the complete integration.
In practice: For commissioning purposes, ask who owns the validation secret and which server receives the submission. Include a failed-validation example in the test record and confirm that the customer has an understandable way to try again. Keep spam protection separate from notification delivery: a successfully validated form still needs an agreed destination and a checked handover. The brief should identify both responsibilities rather than describe the visible challenge alone as a complete, working lead-handling system.
Illustrative example: Reject a form submission if its token fails the server check.
PDPA consent
Consent under Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act must be considered with purpose notification and the applicable statutory rules and exceptions. This is a planning term, not legal advice or a claim that one checkbox settles compliance.
In practice: In a project brief, map the information requested, its intended use, where it is stored and who receives it. Ask the appropriate reviewer to assess the notice and workflow for the actual service. Avoid collecting an extra field merely because a template offers one. If the intended use changes, raise that change for review before reusing the information. Keep the implementation checklist distinct from legal approval, and record unresolved questions rather than describing a draft form as certified compliant.
Illustrative example: Ask the business’s legal reviewer to check the enquiry notice and data flow.
WhatsApp Business API
Business messaging APIs offered through WhatsApp Business Platform. A proposed integration still needs account access, an agreed conversation scope and a human escalation route.
In practice: When scoping a connection, distinguish a simple contact link from a messaging integration that sends and receives through a business account. Name the account owner, the answers allowed and the person who handles exceptions. Test an unavailable connection and decide what the customer sees. Ask which external charges and ongoing maintenance are included. A demonstration on one account should not be treated as evidence that the same permissions, knowledge and handover are already configured for another business.
Illustrative example: Send an approved routine answer and hand a request for an exception to staff.
